Think of our work together as a partnership — an alliance for healing.

My role is to provide a safe space for something you have a natural ability to do (heal, be okay) to come forth and do its thing. But change (good, bad, or otherwise) can be scary! I will serve as your companion and guide on this journey so you don’t have to go it alone.

Oh, and there’s no judgment. Ever.

Individual Counseling

Regardless of your specific issue, all healing starts with grounding yourself in what’s real right now, as painful as that may be.

Like I said, you are a universe.

But you’re also a part of the Universe, as in the big cosmic soup we all swim around in. During our work together, we’ll work on rediscovering that connection, and the inherent groundedness that it brings.

Practical work will include:

  • Dream awareness and discussion
  • Self dialogue
  • Spiritual practices
  • Gratitude exercises

I’m happy to answer any questions and discuss your specific situation before you commit to a session.

Couples Counseling

Marriage is many things… and sometimes it can feel like all those things are problems.

We often think of marriage (or any committed relationship) as the merging of two lives into one. But the truth is, there are three components to a healthy relationship: yours (your partner), mine (yourself), and ours (the relationship itself). Like an equilateral triangle, each element is just as crucial as the other two.

In other words… you must restore your connection to yourself while restoring your connection to each other.

That might sound crazy, especially if you’re feeling disregarded or betrayed by your partner. Every couple is different, of course. But everyone starts with the same fundamentals:

  • Learning to truly listen, and be listened to.
  • Expressing what it is you need.
  • Sorting through all that pain and confusion to determine what (emotionally) belongs to you, what belongs to your partner, and what belongs to the relationship itself.

Each of these skills will promote emotional connection and mutual healing, and you’ll practice them during your sessions and at home.

Other homework may include individual meditations, couples dialogue and gratitude exercises. Individual sessions may also be used, depending on the needs and desires of each partner.

Pastoral Counseling

“Do not seek for anything; do not perform anything; do not intend anything. Simply accept the fact that you are accepted!”

— Paul Tillich, The Shaking of Foundations

A spiritual practice isn’t necessarily about one religion or another. It’s a connection to something larger than yourself.

Some people (including me) refer to that as God. Others call it the Universe, or the Source. But you don’t have to call it anything — nor do you have to be Christian in order to work with me.

The point is that you experience the feeling that there is bigger business than you at work in this world. The sun will always rise and set. Waves will crash on shores. These things will endure, regardless of what’s happening in your day-to-day.

This knowledge — actually experiencing it, not just believing it from afar — can be humbling. And healing. And that’s where the spiritual piece fits into your therapeutic work.

If faith is important to you, I can certainly work within that. But if it’s not? Well, I’m not gonna throw Bibles at you.

SSP

The Safe and Sound Protocol

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a five-day intervention designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience.  The intervention uses prosodic (mother’s voice) vocal music that has been filtered to train the middle ear muscles to focus in on the frequency envelope of human speech.  Once human speech is properly perceived, the portal to social engagement has been opened.  You’ll find you are (or your child is) better able to interpret not only the meaning, but also the intent in conversations.  And the sense of safety that is achieved by better understanding the fluctuations in human voice calms your (or your child’s) physiological state.  Once your system has been primed and your state is calm, further therapy is enhanced and behavioral regulation is improved.

Sessions

Working together, we’ll formulate a general plan, and determine the aim of your therapeutic work.

I integrate the skills of listening, conversation, meditation, Reiki (when/if client agrees) and intuition. I weave these together with the techniques of energy work, verbal dialogue and spiritual presence.

Between-session homework may include things like writing down your dreams, self-dialogue (in the form of journaling, drawing, or other methods), dialogue with your partner, and various self-care exercises.

Insurance & Cost

Jim Colvin is a Blue Cross / Blue Shield provider, and EAN provider for Mission Hospital System.

I also work with other plans as an out-of-network provider. I am usually able to work out affordable fees, depending on your deductibles.

LET’S WORK TOGETHER

The therapeutic relationship is founded on trust and acceptance. It can be scary to place your trust in a therapist, especially if it’s your first time.

I am happy to answer any questions you have and talk with you before scheduling a session to make sure it’s the right fit for both of us.

Please reach out to me using any of the channels below (email is best), and we’ll talk.
